Fuchsia Society
A Potted History

Our Society was founded in 1989 by a small group of local enthusiasts.  Our objective is to encourage, improve and extend the cultivation of Fuchsias in West and Central Cornwall.  The Society has gone from strength to strength becoming the premier specialist Fuchsia society in the South-West.  And with a growing and active membership of over 60 at any time, the Society continues to do its bit to boost the popularity and diversity of the genus Fuchsia in Cornwall.  This includes organising a series of highly successful annual shows and putting on displays and demonstrations at shows and other venues around the county.

Our lively and friendly meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month at Camborne Science and International Academy.  We have talks and demonstrations from many authoritative speakers on a wide variety of Fuchsia related subjects.  Recent visiting speakers have included nationally renowned experts on Fuchsias and other aspects of horticulture and gardening.  A Cornish flavour is as always added with talks from many of our own foremost gardeners and Fuchsia enthusiasts as well as other local horticulturists.

The highlight of the year is certainly our annual show.  It is held on the first Sunday in August at Camborne Science and International Academy.  It is run broadly under British Fuchsia Society (BFS) rules and judged by British Fuchsia Society accredited national judges.  These judges are always thoroughly impressed and quite simply it has become the single Greatest Display and Show of Fuchsias in the South-West.  And certainly the level of participation, entries and variety of plants is unsurpassed even by most national shows.

During the coming months we shall have at our meetings entertaining speakers on all aspects of the Fuchsia and its culture.  Also on hand will be many knowledgeable and experienced members, all only too ready to provide practical help and advice.  There will normally be plants for sale, most not available in garden centres, and also pots and other sundries at bargain prices.

All of our experienced members were beginners once, many within the Society's short lifetime.  With the encouragement of the Society and its friendly and welcoming members there is not a doubt that everyone can grow Fuchsias of which to be thoroughly proud whether they are for show or for the garden.

Grow  'em for fun   Grow  'em to show    or Just .... because  you love 'em
